Local Area
Ashford in the Water is situated on the banks of the River Wye just two miles upstream from Bakewell, in the very centre of the Derbyshire Peak District National Park. The village is conveniently situated for the A6 trunk road linking Matlock and Bakewell with Buxton, and Manchester beyond.
Ashford is an ideal centre for exploring the Peak District, or for basing your walking or cycling holidays around. Nearby Monsal Head, with its famous railway viaduct, provides scenic views over the Wye Valley, while the historic town of Bakewell, with its bustling Monday markets, offers a quality shopping experience in a lively, country town atmosphere. Buxton, famed for its spa waters and annual music festival, and Matlock - traditionally the county town - are both within easy reach, as is Castleton, renowned for its spectacular medieval castle, caverns and rare, Blue John stone. The market town of Chesterfield, with its famous crooked spire, is also linked by a good road.
The surrounding area also contains some of the country's finest historic houses, all of which are with easy reach of Ashford-in-the-water. The most famous include Chatsworth House (pictured right), Haddon Hall, Hardwick Hall and the Hall at Lyme Park.
The Derbyshire Peak District is renowned for its walks, including easy routes along the trail at Monsal Dale or long treks across the peat moors of Kinder Scout. Cycling is also popular, especially on converted, former railways such as the Tissington Trail. Good fly fishing, riding and golf can also be found locally.
