Whats On / Shacklock’s Walk for Rainbows

On Sunday 22nd July 2007 people from across Derbyshire will be stepping out to raise money for Rainbows Children’s Hospice. Rainbows are asking people from all over the county step out in aid of local life limited children like Sophie Byrne.

It is estimated that there are currently more than 20,000 life-limited children in the UK. 5 Year old Sophie from Swadlincote in Derbyshire has a rare condition called tuberous sclerosis complex. She was born with a growth that had attached itself to her brain causing her to have up to 100 seizures a day. By the age of two the seizures had become so serious her only chance of survival was an operation in which the doctors had to remove half of her brain.

Sophie is now 5 years old, she has between 60 - 70 seizures every day, she has no speech, cannot walk, is partially sighted and is completely dependant on her devoted parents Jane and Matt.

Before Sophie came to Rainbows for the first time three years ago, Jane and Matt had had to manage without much-needed support for years. Because of Sophie’s complex care needs she could not be left with anyone.

Sophie’s loves staying at Rainbows and thrives on the one to one attention she receives by the dedicated and caring staff. She adores spending time in the multisensory room and enjoys the specialist music therapy she receives and is always smiling and laughing.

It also gives Jane and Matt a much-needed break, speaking out to encourage more people to take part in Shacklocks Derbyshire Walk of Life Jane says "Rainbows has been a lifeline to us, they have become part of my extended family, providing me both with the emotional and practical support I need whilst totally pampering Sophie, I don’t know what I would do without them".

Shacklocks walk for Rainbows will start at 10.00am at the visitor centre at Carsington Water, registration will commence at 9.00am. The walk will be around the beautiful Carsington Water which is approximately 8 miles. For those not wishing to take part in the full 8 miles there will be the opportunity to take part in a shorter 1 hour guided nature walk. Dogs are welcome and all those taking part will receive a free goody bag sponsored by naturediet dog food.

To register and receive your sponsorship pack please call 01509 638009 or register online at www.rainbows.co.uk or if you don’t have a chance to register you can make a minimum donation of £5.00 on the day.

Paula North organiser quotes "We hope to have people of all ages and all abilities joining us for this fantastic walk. It will be a great day out for all the family. Shacklocks Solicitors have kindly sponsored the event which means every penny raised will go directly to Rainbows making a real difference to the lives of children like Sophie".
