Housed in a converted stone building of great character, the Centre houses a shop and sales area, a variety of displays, an exhibition area and urban studies centre. A viewing platform looks out over Torrs gorge.

Set in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales, the site is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its geological features. The Discovery Centre tells the story of stone in history, science, technology, art and environment.

The Centre occupies a building once used for producing silk and velvet cloth. Displays illustrate the life of the town from its inception to modern times. A gift shop, art gallery and restaurant are on site.

Visit Shardlow and its Heritage Centre for a fascinating insight into this 18th-century canal transhipment port. The Centre is housed in the earliest of the canal warehouses, refurbished and equipped for the village by Mansfield Brewery.
