About Shirley
Close to Ashbourne, this small village has historical connections reaching back to Domesday. Sewallis was originally from here, whose family took the name deShirley and went on to take part in many famous battles, including Sir Hugh, who fought and died at the battle of Shrewsbury on the side of Henry IV.
It has been suggested said that Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed the in the village one night on his way to Derby.
