A small rural village roughly half way between Derby and Ilkeston. Industry used to be centred around the Stanley colliery up until its closure in 1959. There are various remnants of the coal-mining era remaining around the village that are still visible. The church of St Andrew dates back to the 12th century, although it did have major restoration work performed in 1876.
