About Coalville

The town of Coalville derives its name from its relationship in the past with the coal-mining industry. It was due to the discoveries of rich supplies of coal that the population rose so sharply in the 19th century and on into the 20th century.

Coalville quickly established itself in this period as a self-sufficient town that had a high amount of output in terms of the local industry being produced there. Coalville is a fairly new settlement in terms of its history by today’s standards.

There is evidence throughout the surrounding area however of settlements that can be traced back some thousand years or more. Coalville as a place name is traced only so far back as 1833. Coalville offers the visitor all the usual modern amenities and benefits from its location as a good base to explore the surrounding regions.
