Swarkestone

About Swarkestone

Swarkestone has a famous connection with Bonnie Prince Charlie. It was here that he turned his advancing army around, thus making it the furthest southern point made on his armies advance towards London. This was also the scene of Civil War action in 1643 involving the cavaliers and Sir John Gell.

Swarkestone Bridge spans the river Trent and was built in the 14th century. It is a wonderful medieval piece of architecture; the bridge once had its own chapel, one of only three of its kind in Derbyshire.
