About Sheffield

The city of Sheffield is the modern metropolis of South Yorkshire, and is close enough to the Derbyshire Peak District allowing for easy access to many of the regions northern attractions.

Set amongst seven hills an on the River Don, Sheffield origins as a world class steel making city way back in the 16th century, when it was renowned for making cutlery and farming tools. What was then being made from houses and small workshops was later produced from much larger factories, and the landscape of the town began to change as the Industrial Revolution progressed through the centuries. The 18th century saw the introduction of Sheffield Plate by Thomas Boulsover. This and the 19th century saw a steep rise in the population of the area.

Much of the city and surrounding area is heavily industrialised, but is well positioned to explore the surrounding countryside of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and the Yorkshire regions. More recently, Sheffield has become a primary destination for many students, and boasts great shopping, eating and drinking and good leisure facilities.
