Heanor

About Heanor

The town of Heanor is in the Amber Valley region, once a market town that has grown thanks largely to its industrial connections including coal mining, canals and the railways. It lies approximately 8 miles to the north of the city of Derby.

The mines in the area have long been closed and the landscape itself has undergone restoration in order to clean up some of the damage caused. Shipley Country Park and the American Adventure theme park can be found on an old opencast mining site close by. The shape of the areas industry has now taken on newer and more varied appearances, and there are a number of industrial estates around the town. Heanor was also once part of the route of the longest tramway in the world, running from Nottingham to Ripley.

There are some fine examples of churches in the town and surrounding areas, including the Parish Church of St Lawrence, dating back to the 12th century. However, it was rebuilt in the late 19th century and little now remains of that earlier work. Close to the town of Heanor are Shipley Country Park and the American Adventure theme park at Ilkeston.
