Walking in the Peak District

With thousands of miles of public footpaths in the Peak District and Derbyshire, there’s plenty of room for everyone.

Whatever your taste in walking, you’re sure to find something that will appeal to you. If you’re an ardent walker, you can stride out across the peaty plateaux of Kinder and Bleaklow or along long distance paths like Pennine Way, the Limestone Way, the Mid-shires Way and the Trans Pennine Trail. Access to some moorland areas may be suspended during the grouse season.

Enjoy superb views and fine panoramas with very little effort of walking, from the eastern gritstone edges and from Windgather Rocks in the wet. You’ll feel really on top of the world here, with the lowlands spread out below as you make your way along the easy paths of these natural promenades. Good for families with small children, or the less ambitious! The walks along some of the limestone dales, nature trails or disused railway lines such as the Longdendale Trail and the Sett Valley Trail; follow the Derby to Mellbourne Trail for a walk which takes you along the banks of Derwent and towpaths of the Trent and Mersey Canal; or take the Goyt Way from Whalley Bridge along the towpath of the Peak Forest Canal. Gentle footpaths through woodlands, pastureland and along riverbanks are the perfect choice if you’re setting out on a relaxed stroll among spectacular scenery.

Throughout the county, you’ll find plenty of opportunities for short circular walks. Many of these take in local pubs along the way, just the job for a refreshing break or a well-earned rest when you reach the journey’s end!

City and town trails are yet another way to while away an hour or two. Pick up a leaflet and just follow the trail, you’re sure to discover some interesting information about the places along your walk.
