Steeple Grange Light Railway

The SGLR is an 18-inch gauge line near Wirksworth built on the trackbed of a branch of the old Cromford and High Peak Railway, now the High Peak Trail

About Steeple Grange Light Railway

In existence for over 30 years, the Steeple Grange Light Railway is an 18-inch gauge line situated between Cromford and Wirksworth in Derbyshire. It is built on the trackbed of a branch of the old Cromford and High Peak Railway, now the High Peak Trail. Motive power is provided by ex-industrial diesel, battery-electric and petrol locomotives, and passengers are carried in various ex-mining manriders

Visit the railway and you can:
– Enjoy a twentyfive minute ride through dramatic limestone scenery. A ride on the shorter branch line into an SSSI is also included in the ticket where you can learn about the history of limestone and how it was quarried.

– Discover fossils, wild flowers, and possibly some of the wildlife of Killers Dale.

– Hear about why and how the railway was built.

– Investigate the vintage locomotives and rolling stock in the station area.

- In early December take a ride up the line to visit Santa in his grotto on our much loved Santa Specials. Information and tickets can be found at www.sglr.co.uk/events

Opening times:
The railway normally runs on Sundays from the start of April until the last Sunday of September, extra days on Bank Holiday weekends and Santa Specials in early December. See the calendar and Special Events listings below.

Opening hours are 11.00 until 16.00. The railway will operate at other times by special arrangement for groups and private parties.

The railway may not operate if the weather is inclement, so please contact us if you are in any doubt, especially if travelling from a distance.

Admission:
Adults £5: Family £15: Concessions £4: Children aged 4 to 15 £3.

Directions:
The SGLR is situated on the High Peak Trail between Black Rocks and the National Stone Centre, near Wirksworth. You can park at either of these two locations and it is then about five minutes easy walk from the car parks to the railway. Alternatively there is limited parking in Old Porter Lane. The Railway is now included in a brown tourist sign scheme from the Wirksworth, Cromford and Carsington areas. Additional signs are put out on operating days. If using satnav or Google Maps the railway has its own postcode DE4 4GE

Disabled visitors can easily access the site but unfortunately we have no wheelchair accessible carriages
